Liverpool’s new signing Florian Wirtz has opened up about his decision to join the Reds despite interest from several big clubs, especially Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Wirtz has just been officially unveiled by Liverpool after joining from Leverkusen for £116m including bonuses and signing a five-year contract.

Asked why he chose Liverpool, Wirtz replied. “I think it’s the right time in my career to take the next step. And of course I want to go to one of the top three clubs in the world. And in my opinion Liverpool is one of them.”
“I felt Liverpool was the best place to develop. I was impressed by the people here, the team’s mentality and everything the club has to offer. It’s really good. At the end of the day, it’s easy for me to get excited about coming to Liverpool.
“The first time I spoke to the coach, Richard (Hughes) and the others. It was really good and it got better every time I spoke to someone from the club. I felt, ‘This is where I want to be’ and then I was 100 per cent sure I wanted to join Liverpool and it was the best choice for me.”
Wirtz also spoke about playing with Jeremy Frimpong, who also joined Liverpool from Leverkusen this summer. “I think it’s good that we can play together again at a new club, maybe bigger, and come together. I’m looking forward to standing on the pitch with him again.”
