It stated that whether it is an infant or an adult. The “first 60 seconds” after being scalded or burned are very important. If proper first aid is given, it can reduce pain and reduce damage to the wound.

That day, Grandma was cooking in the kitchen. There was a boiling kettle next to her. Normally, Grandma would bring the kettle into the kitchen and fill her 3-year-old grandson’s thermos with cold water.

While he was concentrating on cooking, Grandma didn’t notice what her little grandson was doing. After playing in the living room until he was bored. The little boy noticed that the circuit breaker would automatically cut off when the water boiled. He was curious and reached out to open the lid of the kettle, causing hot steam to shoot up and burn his hand. Causing him to cry immediately.

The busy grandmother was shocked, quickly turned off the stove, carried her grandson to the sink, and turned on the water to run over the little boy’s hands, while comforting him by saying,  “Don’t be afraid, Grandma is here. Wash him clean and he’ll feel better. Don’t cry anymore.”

While comforting her grandson, the grandmother continued to let the water slowly flow over the wound for more than 10 minutes. Until the skin exposed to the steam cooled down and the child began to calm down.

Then, the grandmother prepared a basin filled with cold water and let her grandson put his hand in to soak it. Since the child liked to play in the water. After a while, the child forgot about the wound.

When she saw that the swelling and redness of the wound had reduced. The grandmother took her granddaughter to a nearby hospital.

After a thorough examination, the doctor found that the burn was not severe and did not reach the tissue layer. Because the patient received proper and timely first aid.

The doctor smiled and told the grandmother,  “The child is safe. Fortunately, the grandmother has some knowledge of first aid. I will treat the wound and bandage it. You can go home after receiving the medicine.”

First aid mistakes and what to avoid

1. Holding a baby and crying.   When a baby is scalded or burned, many adults are shocked and feel guilty, which leads to panic and crying with the baby. However, wasting time on emotions does not help at all.

The first 60 seconds are crucial. It would be a mistake to wait until you get to the hospital and do nothing. The first thing to do is to give first aid with slow flowing clean water to help cool your skin.

2. Use ice cubes or cold objects to apply to the wound.

Do not apply ice to the wound. Although it will temporarily reduce the heat on the skin, it will cause the skin to stick to the ice and may cause more serious damage.

3. Applying inappropriate medicine or liquid.

Do not apply balm, fish sauce, soy sauce, or skin cream to the wound as this may cause infection or allergic reaction, which may interfere with the doctor’s diagnosis and treatment.

If a scald or burn occurs , immediately turn on clean water and let it flow over the wound for 10-15 minutes. Avoid applying cold objects or foreign substances to the wound. If the wound is severe, see a doctor immediately.
